Ima Normalia Kusmayanti, S.S., M.Pd.

About Me

Hello, my name is Ima Normalia Kusmayanti. My friends, colleagues and students call me Miss Ima or Ima. I am a lecturer teaching English for Global Career Readiness and English for Academic Writing at the School of Industrial Engineering, Telkom University. My research interests are in learning material development, game-based learning, gamification, EFL vocabulary, and online learning. I love sharing knowledge and experiences with fellow teachers and even with my lovely students. An American Musician, B.B. King said that “the beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you”.

I like to write. My very first piece of writing being published was a poem about love written in 1999. To produce a writing, I need to be in a good mood, inspired, and focused. If there were too many distractions, I could not write. Luckily, my bachelor major was English Literature. For at least six years, my writings were mostly poems, short stories, drama scripts, and essays. Then, after I earned my master degree in 2006, I started to write and develop course modules, textbooks, language tests. The last three course modules that I wrote were in 2016. I still write and develop language tests until now. My goal is to have at least one writing product, any kind, in one year. Paul J. Meyer said that “Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused efforts.”

I earned my bachelor degree in English Literature in 2004 and master degree in English Education in 2006 respectively from the Indonesia University of Education (UPI). I earned the Certification of Lecturer (Serdos) from the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) Ministry of Education and Culture Indonesia and the certification of teacher of Indonesian Language for Foreigners (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing-BIPA) in 2014. To improve and strengthen my EFL teaching knowledge and skills, in 2016, I passed the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) Module 1, 2, and 3. In 2021, I earned the Celoe Moodle Course Creator Certification (CMCC) and the Celoe Course Content Creator Certification (5C) from Telkom University.

Fortunately, I have been involved in several projects with my colleagues. In 2009-2011, along with my two mentors, Retno Hendryanti and Florita Diana Sari, we received the PHK-I Grant from DIKTI Ministry of Education and Culture Indonesia and developed the English Self-Access Program to assists IT Telkom students, lecturers, and staffs in improving their English skills.

In 2012, I created an event called International Language and Culture Festival (ILCF) to promote cross cultural understanding with incredible language instructors and ESAP tutors. ILCF now has been changed into Language and Creativity Challenge from Home (L2CFH) since 2020 and organized under the Language Center of Telkom University.

In 2013-2014, I developed an interactive multimedia activities called IMPAS to improve my students’ English presentation skills with Florita Diana Sari and Warih Maharani. This project was funded by DIKTI Ministry of Education and Culture Indonesia through the Competitive Research Grant.

In June 2018, I created a program named English Games (EnGams) for lecturers and staffs funded by the School of Industrial Engineering Telkom University to improve their English skills and confidence. Due to high enthusiasm, the program was repeated in September and December 2018. I was assisted by my fellow English lecturers and language instructors.

In 2020, I developed a board game called Square Talks! with Retno Hendryanti, Putra Fajar Alam, and Dimas Krisna Aditya. The game is available in tabletop and mobile Android. Currently, a startup named Game Whiz develops, manages, and markets this game. As Mary K. Ash said “there are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened.”

John P. Caponigro said that “we see the world through our experience.” I always love teaching English to Indonesian students. But, in the early 2016, I wondered, what would it be like to teach English or Indonesian to students from other countries? In May 2016, I received a major assignment from the Rector of Telkom University to participate in the Global Scholar Exchange. I flew to Kyiv, Ukraine to teach Indonesian Language (BIPA) at Taras Shevchenko National University until December 2016. Indeed, having a work experience abroad helped me gaining a new perspective and insight.

Then, in December 2019, I was assigned by the International Office Telkom University to teach English to Malaysian students from University of Kuala Lumpur in the Inbound Short Course. It was unforgettable two days and I realized that we should “never stop learning; for when we stop learning, we stop growing” (Loyal Lewman).

I was assigned in managerial positions including as the Assistant Manager of International Class (2009-2011), the Assistant Manager of Language Development (2011-2013), and the Manager of Language Center Telkom University (2013-2017). From these journeys, I remember a famous quote that “life is a journey with problems to solve and lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy” (Unknown). Now, I have embraced my colourful life and ready to create more things.
