The model curriculum guides you by expanding on the standards, but you have a lot of freedom with it in how you teach. It gives you a goal, but how you get there is based on whatever you think will work best for your students.”

I think it was about time Bu Retno took action to finally design the curriculum for the Language Center (LaC) Telkom University (Tel-U). In February 2021, Bu Retno invited me along with other English lecturers and language instructors to attend the first workshop on the development of curriculum for the LaC Tel-U. The first series consisted of two sessions. The first session was about best practices in managing an LaC in a university. The second one was about brainstorming for great ideas for the LaC Tel-U to further strive for a better quality of language service and education.

I believe that there are many established language centers in Bandung and around Indonesia, but one of the best ones is the LaC of my alma mater, Indonesia University of Education (UPI). As I expected, Bu Retno invited my good friend, Eri Kurniawan, Ph.D. who is currently the Head of English Literature Department in UPI. He served as the secretary of the LaC UPI several years ago. He was invited to share his best practices and to ensure everyone invited to the workshop shared the same common grounds on the primary goals of an LaC in a university. Moreover he led the brainstorming session and summarized the great ideas presented in the session.

Continuing the first workshop, the LaC Tel-U once again invited me along with other fellow lecturers from the School of Industrial Engineering (SIE) and other schools to attend the second workshop under the theme “Introduction to Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Development for EFL Programs” in April 2021. The invited speaker was Prof. Dr. Didi Suherdi, M.Ed. my lecturer when I was in college. He taught research methodology. Now, he serves as the Head of English Education Department in UPI. He shared the concept of OBE so that everyone involved in the curriculum development shared the same understanding and had experiences in determining the OBE objectives. He provided examples and guided us through small group discussions.

The main challenge was to choose the right verb in the learning objectives to indicate the learning goals. We must be able to choose the right verb based on the Bloom Taxonomy that clearly shows what we want to achieve at the end of the course and that it is doable and measurable. Honestly, this was the first time that I did this practice. This is actually applicable to the recent English curriculum that Bu Retno and I have developed. By the end of the workshop, I have a clear understanding on how to develop a language curriculum.

I was informed that language experts will contribute to the development of foreign language curriculum, while subject matter experts will contribute to the development of thematic content in the curriculum. I cannot wait for the next workshop regarding the curriculum development for the LaC Tel-U. This has been one of my dreams to contribute to the LaC Tel-U as an effort to strive for a better quality of language service and education.
